About the department
Established in the year 2004 with an intake of 60 students , the department offers UG programme and carries out academic activities with adequate faculty, well equipped laboratories/workshops and students admitted on merit basis through Common Entrance Examination of Kerala.
Apart from regular curriculum schedule , various co-curricular activities like project exhibitions, workshops on areas like PCB fabrication, free software, IoT(Internet of Things), on-line courses, special sessions on spoken-tutorials, language lab , AutoCad etc are conducted in the department . Several student projects are approved and funded by research agencies like CERD, KSCSTE. Seminars and workshops on emerging areas by expert faculty talks are conducted to enhance the technical competence of students. Visits to nearby industries are undertaken to expose the students to industrial environment . Students are given opportunities to organize and co-ordinate programmes on awareness and hands-on training conducted by department association named ‘Electrino’ in emerging areas related to of Electronics &Communication. Frequent interaction, appraisal and feedback within the trio of faculty, students and parents are carried out to monitor and improve the student performance. Many of the students passed out from the department are well placed in MNCs, Govt Sector Jobs and also pursuing higher studies in reputed Universities in India an Abroad.
The department has a team of adequate regular faculty with high qualification including Doctorate and post-graduation and experience ranging from 10 to 25 years. The specialization areas of faculty include DSP, Microwave theory, VLSI, opto-electonics and instrumentation. Faculty members have published research articles in reputed journals both national and international. Senior faculty members are members of expert committee of AICTE, APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University , IEEE . The project proposals of faculty in the department are approved and funded by research agencies like CERD, KSCSTE. Also expert talks are delivered by faculty to other institutions in areas of DSP, Image processing, VLSI, PIC & Microcontrollers , Embedded Systems . Faculty Development Programmes sponsored by AICTE, ISTE, KSCSTE are conducted in the department to enhance the domain-knowledge of faculty. Also the technical staff of labs/workshops are given training on handling state-of-the-art techniques and skills to improve content delivery in practical classes.
The department has well furnished & air-conditioned seminar hall with LCD projector, multimedia and internet facility . All class rooms are smart class rooms with LCD projector and multimedia facility. The computer centre of department with networking , high speed internet and multimedia facility provides adequate facility for student projects and learning new tools .Department library is equipped with books in specialised topics .
The important facilities in laboratories of the department :
DSP lab-facilitates students to study and develop projects based on signal and image processing with DSP trainer kits, desktop computers, DSO, function generators
Basic Communication lab –familiarize students with basic communication circuits with modulation/demodulation trainer kits, digital modulation trainer kits, function generators etc.
Advanced communication lab -students are given practice on modern communication systems using microwave test bench, fiber optic trainer kit, modules of photodiode, APD, LED
Microprocessors & Microcontrollers lab- 8085 & 8086 microprocessor trainer kits, 8051 microcontroller trainer kit, PIC , peripheral interface cards of stepper, ADC, Display and computers
Logic circuit design lab- imparts training on basic digital circuits implementation and designing and testing of complex digital circuitry using design kit, FPGA kit,
Electronic circuits lab for giving foundation practice to students enabling them to undergo advanced training in circuit design and equipped with function generators, DSO, simulation software, power supplies, multimeters
Electronics workshop – to facilitate the students to have hands-on experience in developing PCB design and fabrication both manually and by software to enable them to undertake minor and major projects successfull.
Project lab - provides computer facility, trainer kits based on PIC, microcontrollers, Atmega , add –on cards, Wi-fi facility and networking for students and staff to undertake curriculum based projects and research based projects.
